DONO, Patriarch of Antioch. - He was the nephew of the patriarch John, whom he succeeded in 441-42 in the see of Antioch. He was formed in a monastery near Jerusalem under the guidance of St. Euthymius. Elected bishop, he distinguished himself by his firm orthodoxy, but at the same time he revealed little understanding and prudence. He was the first to unmask the Monophysite error of Eutyches in a rather forceful letter to the emperor Theodosius, but then little by little he allowed himself to be swept along by the heretical current led by Dioscorus. At the so-called Robber Council of Ephesus in 449 he even went so far as to subscribe to the rehabilitation of Eutyches and the deposition of Eusebius of Dorylaeum and Flavian of Constantinople and of some of his own suffragan bishops, all champions of orthodoxy. But shortly afterward he himself was deposed, and having withdrawn to his monastery he died there in obscurity.
