DONO, POPE. - Son of the Roman Maurizio, he succeeded Adeodato II on 2 Nov. 676. Under him the schism initiated at Ravenna by Archbishop Mauro came to an end, with the return to subjection of his successor Reparato. In turn, the emperor Costantino Pogonato was moving to settle the dispute between East and West. The arduous negotiations had not yet been concluded when the Pope died (11 Apr. 678).
The Lib. Pont. informs us that D. purged the Syrian coenobium called Monasterium Boerianum of Nestorianism; paved the atrium of the Vatican basilica; and also restored the church of S. Eufemia near the Appian ALBANI (v.), and the basilica of S. Paolo fuori le Mura, or, as Duchesne believes, another small church on the Ostian Way.
