DONUS, Pope. - Son of the Roman Maurizio, he succeeded Adeodatus II on 2 Nov. 676. Under him the schism that had been opened in Ravenna by Archbishop Maurus was closed, with the return to subjection of his successor Reparatus. In turn the emperor Constantine Pogonatus turned to settling the dispute between East and West. The laborious negotiations had not yet been concluded when the Pope died (11 Apr. 678).

The Lib. Pont. informs us that D. purged the Syrian monastery known as Monasterium Boerianum of Nestorianism; he paved the atrium of the Vatican basilica; he also restored the church of St. Euphemia near the Appian Way in the territory of Albano (v.), and the basilica of St. Paul Outside the Walls, or, as Duchesne holds, another small church on the Ostian Way.
