DONUS, pope. — Son of the Roman Maurice, he succeeded Adeodatus II on 2 November 676. Under his pontificate the schism opened at Ravenna by Archbishop Maurus was brought to a close with the submission of his successor Reparatus. The emperor Constantine Pogonatus in turn sought to settle the dispute between East and West. The laborious negotiations had not yet been concluded when the Pope died (11 April 678).
The *Liber Pontificalis* informs us that Donus purged the Syrian monastery called the *Monasterium Boerianum* of Nestorianism; he paved the forecourt of the Vatican basilica; he also restored the church of St Euthemia near the Appian Way on the territory of Albano (q.v.), and the basilica of St Paul’s outside the Walls, or, as Duchesne believes, another small church on the Ostian Way.
