**DEMETRIUS (DIMITRI), TUPTALO.** – Dissident bishop of Rostov, born in 1651, died in 1709, declared a saint by the Russian dissident Church in 1757. Of Ukrainian origin, he was a student at the college of Kiev. He was ordained priest by the bishop of Chernigov, Lazarus Baranovich. He also defended before the patriarch of Moscow the teachings of his school regarding the moment of the Eucharistic transubstantiation, the Immaculate Conception, and the Assumption of Mary. At the time of Stephen Yavorsky, he came to Russia and was then elected first metropolitan of Siberia (1701) and later of Rostov (1702).
D. wrote a book against the "Old Believers"; his masterpiece is the "Menaea," that is, the lives of the saints for each month. Since the mid-16th century, this had been the first major revision, officially published by the Holy Synod in 1759. The school founded at Rostov by D. disappeared after his death.
