DI BREME, LODOVICO ARBORIO GATTINARA. - Born in Turin in 1780, died there on 15 August 1820. Almoner of the viceroy of Italy Eugène de Beauharnais, councillor of state in the first Kingdom of Italy; after Napoleon's fall, he retired to private life. He derived his vast culture from the liveliest Italian thinkers and poets of the eighteenth century and from the works of Mme de Staël, A. G. Schlegel and Sismondi; his contacts with Byron and Stendhal, too, had not been barren. Di Breme had arrived at the assertive position of the most absolute idealism through his passionate confutation of sensualism and rationalism, before the Romantic movement entered Italy; for this reason he was considered a precursor. He promoted the first Italian Romantic periodical (Il bersagliere, later entitled Il conciliatore), on which he wrote numerous articles. He opposed deism, sensualism, and also atheism, which appeared to him as the most anti-hypothetical of states of mind.
