DUHR, Bernard. – Jesuit, historian, b. at Cologne on 2 Aug. 1852, d. at Munich on 21 Sept. 1930. He devoted himself with enthusiasm to historical studies concerning the Society of Jesus, leaving works of certain historical and documentary value.
Besides his numerous articles in cultural journals (*Stimmen aus Maria-Laach, Historisches Jahrbuch des Görresgesellschaft, Römische Quartalschrift*, etc.), his fame is linked to *Jesuiten-Fabeln* (Freiburg in Br. 1892; 4th ed., ibid. 1904; Italian trans., 2 vols., Florence 1908), in which he examines and refutes the numerous accusations spread against the Order by a whole literature that was superficial and hostile; *Pombal* (Freiburg in Br. 1891); *Die Studienordnung der Gesellschaft Jesu* (ibid. 1896); but above all to *Geschichte der Jesuiten in den Ländern deutscher Zunge von 16. bis 18. Jahrh.* (4 vols.: I and II, ibid. 1907–13; III–IV, Munich-Ratisbon 1921–28).
