DUHR, BERNARD. — Jesuit, historiographer, b. at Colonia on 2 Aug. 1852, d. at Monaco on 21 Sept. 1930. He devoted himself enthusiastically to historical studies concerning the Society of Jesus, leaving works of unquestionable historical and documentary value.
Besides his numerous articles in scholarly journals (Stimmen aus Maria-Laach, Histor. Jahrbuch des Görresgesellschaft, Römische Quartalschrift, etc.), his reputation is linked to Jesuiten-Fabeln (Friburgo in Br. 1892; 4th ed., ibid. 1904; Italian trans., 2 vols., Firenze 1908), in which he examines and refutes the many accusations circulated against the Order by an entire body of superficial and hostile literature; Pombal (Friburgo in Br. 1891); Die Studienordnung der Gesellschaft Jesu (ibid. 1896); but above all to Geschichte der Jesuiten in den Ländern deutscher Zunge von 16. bis 18. Jahrh. (4 vols.: I and II, ibid. 1907–13; III–IV, Monaco-Ratisbona 1921–28).
