DÜHR, BERNARD. - Jesuit, historian, b. in Cologne on 2 Aug. 1852, d. in Munich on 21 Sept. 1930. He applied himself with enthusiasm to historical studies concerning the Society of Jesus, leaving works of sure historical and documentary value.

In addition to his numerous articles in cultural journals (Stimmen aus Maria-Laach, Histor. Jahrbuch des Görresgesellschaft, Römische Quartalschrift, etc.), his fame is linked to Jesuiten-Fabeln (Freiburg im Br. 1892; 4th ed., ibid. 1904; Italian version, 2 vols., Florence 1908), in which he examines and refutes the numerous accusations circulated against the Order by a whole superficial and spiteful literature; Pombal (Freiburg im Br. 1891); Die Studienordnung der Gesellschaft Jesu (ibid. 1896); but above all to Geschichte der Jesuiten in den Ländern deutscher Zunge von 16. bis 18. Jahrh. (4 vols.: I and II, ibid. 1907-13; III-IV, Munich-Ratisbon 1921-28).
