EBBO. - Bishop of Reims. Educated at the Carolingian court, he was chaplain to Louis the Pious, by whom he was made bishop in 816.

In 822 he went to preach the gospel in Denmark and, as imperial legate, also took an interest in the evangelization of Sweden. In 833 he placed himself at the head of the rebels against Louis, who was deposed at St-Médard. E. in turn was deposed by the Synod of Thionville. When Lothair ascended the throne of Germany, in Dec. 840 he was rehabilitated and was able to return to Reims. He fled from there the following year; he was then definitively deposed and in his place Hincmar was elected. Having also fallen out with Lothair, E. took refuge in Germany and obtained from Louis II the bishopric of Hildesheim. He died on 20 March 851.
