EBONE. – Bishop of Reims. Educated at the Carolingian court, he was chaplain to Ludovico il Pio, who made him bishop in 816.
In 822 he went to preach the Gospel in Denmark and, as imperial legate, also took an interest in the evangelization of Sweden. In 833 he placed himself at the head of the rebels against Ludovico, who was deposed at St-Médard. E. in turn was deposed by the Synod of Thionville. When Lotario ascended the throne of Germany, he was rehabilitated in December 840 and was able to return to Reims. He fled from there the following year; he was then definitively deposed, and Inomaro was elected in his place. Having also fallen out with Lotario, E. took refuge in Germany and obtained the bishopric of Hildesheim from Ludovico II. He died on 20 March 851.
