EBRARD di BÉTHUNE. — Controversialist, born at Béthune near Calais, who lived between the twelfth and thirteenth centuries. The lack of historical data renders his life obscure.
He is the author of Antihaeresis, a detailed exposition of Cathar doctrines, which, however, are not sufficiently refuted (R. indulges in the allegorical interpretation of Scripture). The first to publish the Antihaeresis was the Jesuit Giacomo Gretser in Trias scriptorum adversus Waldensium sectam (Ingolstadt 1614), under the title changed to Liber contra Waldenses. maxiina bibliotheca veterum Patrum, XXIV (Lyon 1677), pp. 1525–84. The attribution of Graecismus, a simple treatise on grammar, is uncertain.
