EBRARD OF BÉTHUNE. - Controversialist, b. at Béthune near Calais, lived between the 12th and 13th centuries. The lack of historical data makes his life obscure.
He is the author of Antihaeresis, a detailed exposition of Cathar doctrines, which, however, are not sufficiently refuted (R. indulges in the allegorical interpretation of Scripture). The first to publish the Antihaeresis was the Jesuit Giacomo Gretser in Trias scriptorum adversus Waldensium sectam (Ingolstadt 1614) with the title changed to Liber contra Waldenses. The last edition of the Antihaeresis appeared in the same century in Maximaxima bibliotheca veterum Patrum, XXIV (Lyons 1677), pp. 1525-84. The attribution of Graecismus*, a simple grammar treatise, is uncertain.
