ELEUSIS. - Homoian bishop of Cyzicus, belonging to the clergy of Constantinople; in 356 he was consecrated bishop of Cyzicus by Macedonius. Having arrived in his diocese, he fought the Novatians, bringing down their sect. He took part in the Council of Ancyra in 358 and the following year in that of Seleucia, where he supported important positions. Deposed at the Council of Constantinople of 360, under the accusation of having baptized and ordained a former priest of Hercules, he was driven into exile and replaced by Eunomius. But the latter was not acceptable to the people, and E. was able to reoccupy the see through the amnesty of Julian the Apostate; he was driven from it by the same emperor in 362.
Having returned to his see at the death of Julian, he held a synod in 376 and took part in that of Antioch of Caria in 378. When the Macedonian controversy broke out, E. followed his master, maintaining that the Holy Spirit was a creature. Having recourse in 381 to the Council of Constantinople, he refused to subscribe to the faith of Nicaea and was therefore excluded from the sessions. In 383, together with other heterodox bishops, he was summoned to Constantinople by Theodosius, but he remained obstinate in his theories. He was able, however, to return to Cyzicus, where he died shortly afterward.
