SOPHIA, PISTIS, ELPIS e AGAPE, sante, martiri. - Unknown to the most ancient Roman liturgical documents, they were inserted by Ado in his Martyrology, whence they passed into the Roman one, Sophia on Sept. 30, and the others on Aug. 1.

Nevertheless, the Itineraries of the 7th century and the papyrus of Monza commemorate them, both on the Via Aurelia and on the Via Latina, on account of which some authors have maintained the existence of different groups. In the 8th century the priest John of Milan spread a groundless legend, which places their martyrdom in the time of the emperor Hadrian.
