SIMEON STYLITES the YOUNG, saint. — He is commemorated on 24 May by the Eastern Churches and on 3 September by the Latins. There exists a very lengthy Life of St S. (BHG, 1689-91). The date of 3 September seems to be due to C. Baronius, and the chronology concerning him is very uncertain.
He was born at Antioch to Edessene parents and, from the age of seven, is said to have become a stylite. He later changed, however, more

SIMEON STYLITES, after living for 73 years on his pillar, received priestly ordination. He died at the age of 75 on 26 May 592 (according to H. Delehaye). Hymns (still sung on 26 October in the Byzantine Church), as well as letters and ascetic sermons, are attributed to him.
