Simeon Stylites the Younger, Saint

SIMEONE STILITA il GIOVANE, santo. - He is commemorated on May 24 among the Orientals and on Sept. 3 among the Latins. A very lengthy Vita of S. exists (BHG, 1689-91). The date of Sept. 3 seems to be due to C. Baronio, and the chronology concerning him is very uncertain.

Born in Antioch of Edessene parents, he is said to have become a stylite as early as the age of seven. He changed, however, several

times his column or elevated stone block. The hill on which S.'s column stood was called the "mountain of miracles." Upon it, at the age of 33, he received priestly ordination. He died at the age of 75, on May 26, 592 (according to H. Delehaye). Hymns (which are still sung on Oct. 26 in the Byzantine Church) are attributed to him, as well as letters and ascetic sermons.
