EMEROBAPTISTS. - A Jewish sect, so called because of the daily ablution practiced in it. Hegesippus, in Eusebius (Hist. eccl., IV, 22, 7), mentions the H. among the seven Jewish religious groups.

Epiphanius (Haer., 17) knows that in their religious ideas they were not different from the scribes and Pharisees, but that they believed it necessary to wash ("baptize") themselves every day, without indicating the hour of their ablution. In the pseudo-Clementine Homilies (II, 23) St. John the Baptist is described as an H. The Constit. Apost. (VI, 6, 3) say that the H. washed every day beds, cups, chairs, etc. It is not known whether the H. have a connection with the baptists who under other names (e.g., masboteans) are mentioned among the Jewish sects, primarily with those who, according to the Babylonian Talmud (Bērākhōth, 22 a), practice immersion in the morning.
