EPIPHANIUS of SALAMIS. - Born after 310 in a small village near Eleutheropolis in Palestine, perhaps of Jewish parents (v. Chronicle of Seer: P. 5, 301). He spent many years among the ascetics in Egypt. In 367 he was elected bishop of Constantia in Cyprus. Later (390 or 392) he preached against Origen in Jerusalem and succeeded in detaching St. Jerome from his teacher. In 400 he was incited by Theophilus of Alexandria against Chrysostom, but, having discovered Theophilus' motives, he deserted before the close of the Oak Synod and died during the return journey in 403.
