EUBEL, KONRAD. — Conventual Franciscan friar and historian of the Franciscan Order, b. 19 January 1842 at Sintzheim (Bavaria), d. 11 February 1923 at Würzburg. Having entered the Order in 1864, he became definitor general in 1898; from 1882 onwards he devoted himself to historical scholarship.
Among his works are to be noted the *Geschichte der oberdeutschen (Strasburger) Minoritenprovinz* (Würzburg 1886) and the *Geschichte der Königlichen Minoritenprovinz* (Cologne 1906). He also compiled the invaluable *Hierarchica catholica medii aevi sive summorum pontificum, S. R. E. cardinalium, ecclesiarum antistitum series ab anno 1198* (2 vols., Regensburg 1897–1910; 2nd ed., Münster 1913–14). Vol. III was produced by G. van Gulik in collaboration with E. himself (2nd ed., Münster 1923), covering the entire 16th century; vol. IV (Münster 1935), by P. Gauchat, also a Conventual, extends the work to 1667. This most important work supplies, for the period it covers, the place of F. Gams’s work.
