EUBEL, KONRAD. — Conventual Franciscan, historian of the Franciscan Order, born on 19 January 1842 at Sinning (Bavaria), died on 5 February 1923 at Würzburg. Having become a friar in 1864, he became a general definitor in 1898; from 1882 onward he devoted himself to historical scholarship.
Among his works, mention should be made of the Geschichte der oberdentschen (Strassburger) Minoritenprovinz (Würzburg 1886) and the Geschichte der Kölnischen Minoriten-Ordensprovinz (Cologne 1906). He also composed the invaluable Hierarchia catholica media aevi sive summonum pontificum, cardinalium, ecclesiarum antistitum series ab anno 1798 (2 vols., Regensburg 1897–1910, 2nd ed. Münster 1913–14); vol. III is due to G. van Gulik and E. himself (2nd ed. Münster 1923) and covers the entire sixteenth century; vol. IV (Münster 1935) is the work of P. Gauchat, likewise a Conventual, and extends to 1667. This extremely important work supplements, for the period it covers, the work of P. Gams.
