EUBEL, KONRAD. - Conventual Franciscan, historian of the Franciscan Order, b. 19 Jan. 1842 at Sinning (Bavaria), d. 5 Feb. 1923 at Würzburg. Having become a friar in 1864, he became definitor general in 1898; from 1882 onward he devoted himself to historical scholarship.
Among his works, mention should be made of the Geschichte der oberdeutschen (Strassburger) Minoritenprovinz (Würzburg 1886) and the Geschichte der Kölnischen Minoriten-Ordensprovinz (Cologne 1906). He also wrote the highly valuable Hierarchia catholica medii aevi sive summonum pontificum, cardinalium, ecclesiarum antistitum series ab anno 1798 (2 vols., Regensburg 1897-1910, 2nd ed. Münster 1913-14); vol. III is due to G. van Gulik and to E. himself (2nd ed. Münster 1923) and covers the whole of the 16th century; vol. IV (Münster 1935) is the work of P. Gauchat, likewise a Conventual, and reaches as far as 1667. This very important work supplies, for the period it covers, the work of P. Gams.
