BOBIENSIAN EXCERPTS. — This is the name given to a collection found in a manuscript from Bobbio (now cod. Ambros. G 58 sup., 10th/11th c.) containing, besides Roman texts (derived from Justinianic sources, the Code and the Novels, the latter according to the Italian epitome version), also canon law texts. The title of the collection, Excerpta ex libro legum novellarum et codicis ad episcopos et clerum peritentia, which appears in the manuscript in a hand of the 15th c., is of doubtful authenticity according to Maassen and Conrat.
The collection, consisting of 86 chapters, belongs either to the 9th or to the beginning of the 10th c. It contains, among other things, provisions on the ordination of bishops, their obligation of residence, their procedural privileges, the recognition of the canons of the first four ecumenical councils, the recognition of the jurisdictional power of bishops, metropolitans, and patriarchs, and the privileges of clerics and churches.
