EZR (ESDRAS). - Armenian Katholikos (639–51), who, under the emperor Ezeilo, when the latter had definitively defeated Cosroe Parwiz (628) and extended the frontiers of the Empire as far as those conquered by the emperor Maurizio in Greater Armenia, convoked the Synod of Karin (Erzerum) between the years 629 and 630. In the presence of the emperor, he officially accepted the Fourth Ecumenical Council and its Christological formula, and entered into communion with the Greeks. In return, he was permitted to exercise his patriarchal jurisdiction over the territories of Armenia under Byzantium and received as a gift more than a third of the province of Kolb.
The institution of the canonical hour of the Armenian Orologhion, called Ortus solis, is attributed to the katholikos E. It is the hour following Matins and preceding “Terce.”
