GREGORY VI, APIRAT. - The last Armenian katholikós of the Pahlavouni family (1194-1203). He, together with Bishop St. Nerses of Lambron and Leo II, first king of Armenian Cilicia, became the most tenacious champion of the Union.

After the death of Emperor Manuel Komnenos, negotiations with the Greeks were resumed under Isaac II Angelos (1185-1195) and then under Alexios III Angelos (1195-1203), at the Armenian Council of Tarsus (1196), of which St. Nerses of Lambron was the soul. After the negotiations failed owing to the scant understanding of the Greeks, G. and St. Nerses, endowed with rare far-sightedness, tightened the bonds with Rome, sealed by the coronation of Leo I as king by Innocent III at Tarsus on 6 January 1198, at the hands of Conrad of Wittelsbach; and by the subsequent Armenian embassy to Rome, between the years 1199-1203. G. received the pallium, and the Armenian army received the indulgences of the crusaders.
