GREGORIO II VKAJASSER. - Armenian Katholikós (1065-1105). He was the first in the line of the Pahlaw family, which, after six centuries, restored the hereditary priesthood of the Parthew family of St. Gregorio Illuminatore.
It is accepted that, after 1074, he travelled to Rome with the intention of union with Pope Gregorio VII, and to venerate the relics of the Apostles. The Pope refers to this in a letter of 7 Dec. 1074; he likewise alludes to an embassy from the katholikós in the letter of 6 June 1080 addressed to G. In it he proposed acceptance of the Council of Chalcedon and the correction of certain errors.
According to L. Alísa, this marks the beginning of the papal correspondence with the Armenian Church.
During the long period of his patriarchate, G. reformed and updated the Armenian Martyrology, adding new saints of the Armenian and Greek Churches; for this reason he was named Vkajasser, that is, Philomartyr.
