GREGORY II VKAJASSER. - Armenian Katholikós (1065-1105). He is the first of the Pahlaw family, which after six centuries restored the emeritus priesthood of the Parthew family of St. Gregory the Illuminator.
A journey by him after 1074 to Rome is admitted, with the purpose of union with Pope Gregory VII and to venerate the relics of the Apostles. The Pope refers to it in a letter of 7 Dec. 1074; he also alludes to an embassy from the katholikós in the letter of 6 June 1080 addressed to G. In it he proposes the acceptance of the Council of Chalcedon and the correction of certain errors. This, according to L. Ališan, is the beginning of the papal correspondence with the Armenian Church.
During the long period of his patriarchate, G. reformed and updated the Armenian Martyrology, adding new saints of the Roman and Greek Churches; for this he was named Vkajasser, i.e., Philomartyr.
