GREGORIO IV, TAY. - Armenian Katholikós (1173–93), learned and pious. Together with his uncle St. Nerses the Gracious, he promoted the liberation of the Armenian Church from the ambiguities concerning the Council of Chalcedon. At the Armenian Synod of Hroniklay (1179), he induced the 33 Armenian bishops to subscribe to the profession of Catholic faith drawn up by St. Nerses the Gracious. When this letter of communion reached Byzantium, Manuel I Comnenus was dead. If the bond with the Greeks achieved little success because of this death, that with Rome was instead crowned by the Armenian embassy to Lucius III at Verona (1184), who confirmed the integrity of G.’s profession of faith and sent him the ring, the pallium, the mitre, and the ritual books. Relations of communion continued under Clement III.
