GREGORY IV, TAȲ. — Armenian Katholikos (173–93), learned and pious. Together with his uncle St Nerses the Graceful, he promoted the liberation of the Armenian Church from misunderstandings regarding the Council of Chalcedon. At the Armenian Synod of Hromklay (1179), he induced the thirty-three Armenian bishops to subscribe to the profession of Catholic faith drawn up by St Nerses the Graceful. When this letter of communion reached Byzantium, Manuel I Comnenus had already died. Although the link with the Greeks met with little success on account of this death, the connection with Rome was crowned by the Armenian embassy to Lucius III at Verona (1184), which confirmed the integrity of Gregory’s profession of faith and sent him the ring, pallium, mitre, and ritual books. Communion relations continued under Clement III.
