GREGORY OF BERGAMO. – Theologian and bishop, born in Bergamo in the second half of the 11th century, martyred there on 9 June 1146. A Vallumbrosan monk and friend of St Bernard, he became bishop of his native city in 1133.
Between 1130 and 1140 he composed the Tractatus de veritate Corporis et Sanguinis Christi, transcribed on behalf of Mabillon by I. A. Casari in 1686 (the original codex is lost, but a copy is preserved in Paris, Bibliothèque nationale lat. 17, 187). It was first published by P. A. Uccelli (Scritti inediti del b. Gregorio Barbarigo, Parma 1877, pp. 673-745) and reprinted by H. Hurter (S.S. Patrum opuscula selecta, XXXIX, Innsbruck 1879, pp. 1-123).
This Eucharistic work was deservedly praised by Mabillon, for although it did not achieve the diffusion of that of his contemporary Alger of Liège (v.), it shares its merits: clarity of expression and doctrinal certainty.
