GREGORY OF BERGAMO. - Theologian and bishop, b. at Bergamo in the second half of the 11th century, d. there as a martyr on 9 June 1146. A Vallombrosan monk and friend of St. Bernard, he became bishop of his native city in 1133.

Between 1130 and 1140 he composed the Tractatus de veritate Corporis et Sanguinis Christi, transcribed, on behalf of Mabillon, by I. A. Casari in 1686 (the codex is lost; a copy is preserved in Paris, Bibl. nat. lat. 17, 187), published for the first time by P. A. Uccelli (Scritti inediti del b. Gregorio Barbarigo, Parma 1877, pp. 673-745) and reprinted by H. Hurter (SS. Patrum opuscula selecta, XXXIX, Innsbruck 1879, pp. 1-123).

This Eucharistic work was deservedly appreciated by Mabillon, because, although it did not enjoy the diffusion of that of his contemporary Alger of Liège (v.), it possesses its merits: clarity of expression and sureness of doctrine.
