EZNIK. — Also called Kolpatzi, or of Kolb, an Armenian writer of the fifth century, who took part in the translation of the Bible and wrote an Adeerme haereses, in four volumes, to refute the theories of paganism, Mazdeism, Greek philosophy, and Manichaeism. His style is considered eminently classical for its purity and elegance (first editions in Smyrna 1762 and in Venice 1826).
BIBL.: There are two good German translations of E., that of J. M. Schmid (Vienna 1900) and that of S. Weber (Angew. Schriften..., I, Munich 1917, pp. 1–180). The French translation by P. E. Le Vaillant de Florival, Relat. des différents sectes... par le docteur E., Paris 1853, is somewhat defective. Cf. also: L.
