GIOVANNI FATTORI. - Painter, born in Livorno on 6 Sept. 1825, died in Florence on 30 Aug. 1908.
He is the most famous and greatest of the Tuscan Macchiaioli. A pupil of Bezzuoli at the Academy of Florence and a close observer of 15th-century painting, in his best compositions depicting landscapes, genre scenes and military subjects as well as in his portraits, some of which are truly fine, he seems to link up with the great Tuscan pictorial tradition. This is especially true of the strength of expression achieved through a clear, pure, very luminous colour, applied in broad areas that define the planes with vivid clarity, sometimes delimited by contours of a very dark brown colour. His works are in the National Gallery of Modern Art in Florence and in that of Rome, in the Civic Museum of Livorno and in the principal collections of 19th-century Italian art. — See pl. LXXIII.
