FATTORI, GIOVANNI. - Painter, b. in Livorno on 6 Sept. 1825, d. in Florence on 30 Aug. 1908.
He is the most famous and the greatest of the Tuscan "Macchiaioli". A pupil of Bezzuoli at the Academy of Florence and an attentive observer of 15th-century painting, in his best compositions depicting landscapes, genre scenes and military subjects as well as in portraits, some of which are truly beautiful, he seems to link himself to the great Tuscan pictorial tradition. This is above all due to the force of expression achieved by means of a limpid, frank, highly luminous color, distributed in areas of color that define with lively clarity the planes, sometimes bounded by outlines of a very dark brown color. His works are in the Galleria nazionale d'arte moderna in Florence and in that of Rome, in the Museo civico of Livorno and in the principal Italian art collections of the 19th century. - See plate LXXIII.
