FEBRONIA, Saint, Martyr. - The information about her personality and her martyrdom is uncertain; the earliest accounts are from the 7th century. She was venerated in Constantinople, in whose Synaxarium she is commemorated on June 25.

The Passio, largely legendary, which is claimed to have been written by a disciple of F., recounts that the saint lived in a monastery at Nisibis. When the persecution of Diocletian broke out, while all her companions fled in fear, F. remained. She was therefore seized and brought to trial. Urged with promises and enticements to sacrifice, she refused energetically; she was therefore horribly scourged, flayed, mutilated and finally beheaded. A great church was built in her honor, but her body remained buried in the monastery where she had lived, since it could not be transported.
