FELIX OF NOLA, Saint. - Of a noble family originally from Syria, from childhood he consecrated himself to the Lord and was ordained a priest by Bishop Maximus of Nola. During the persecution of Diocletian he was tormented for the faith but did not die a martyr, although he was venerated as one.
Over his tomb a sumptuous basilica was built, a destination of numerous pilgrimages, where miracles also took place. Bishop St. Paulinus celebrated him with numerous and most beautiful poems composed for the dies natalis which falls on Jan. 14. Pope Damasus too dedicated a poem of thanksgiving to him for having experienced his patronage during the struggle with Ursinus. In Rome he was venerated in the church dedicated to him in Pincis, which gave occasion for great confusion regarding his person and for the multiplication of hagiographic legends.
