FREDERICK WILLIAM II, King of Prussia. - B. 25 Sept. 1744, d. 16 Nov. 1797. Son of Augustus William, firstborn of Frederick II, having predeceased his father in 1758, he succeeded the latter in 1786. A weak and indolent character, he allowed lovers and favorites to dominate the court. In 1792 he took part in the coalition against France: military defeats and the exhaustion of the finances led to the Peace of Basel, which took from Prussia the territories on the left bank of the Rhine. A loss compensated by the acquisitions obtained at the expense of Poland in the second and third partitions.
