FREDERICK III, Emperor. - B. Sept. 21, 1415, d. Aug. 19, 1493. Elected King of Germany on Feb. 2, 1440 (crowned in 1442), he was the last of the German rulers to take the imperial crown in Rome, on March 19, 1452.
Incapable of a resolute and energetic policy, he failed to secure the obedience of Bohemia or of Hungary, in conflict with two dangerous neighbors: George of Poděbrady, King of Bohemia, and Matthias Corvinus, King of Hungary. But not even in the hereditary lands was he able to impose his authority, and he had to struggle for a long time with the German princes and with his brother Albert VI. After a period of understanding, Matthias Corvinus made war on him and occupied part of Austria and Vienna (1485). F. nevertheless knew how to prepare considerable advantages for his family in the future, both by concluding agreements with Matthias Corvinus for the succession to the Hungarian throne and by arranging the marriage of his son Maximilian to Mary of Burgundy, heiress of the Duchy of Burgundy.
