FIANARANTSOA, APOSTOLIC VICARIATE. — On the island of Madagascar; it was erected on 10 May 1913, with territory detached from the Apostolic Vicariate of Central Madagascar, now Tananarive, and entrusted to the Society of Jesus. It is situated in the central-southern part of the island. The coastal region has a debilitating and deadly climate for Europeans because of the numerous waterways and swamps; in the forest region the climate is humid and roads are lacking; on the highlands, on the other hand, life is less harsh and healthier.
