DAUGHTERS OF CHARITY, called Servants of the Poor. - Institute founded in Montréal in 1843 by Msgr. Ignazio Bourget and by Mrs. Marie Emmélie Eugène Tavernier, widow Gamelin, for the care of the poor and the sick in hospitals and nursing homes, and of children in asylums, orphanages, dispensaries, etc. Approved by the Holy See in 1900, they today have 125 houses with 3552 religious.

DAUGHTERS OF CHARITY, called SISTERS OF MERCY OF ST. VINCENT DE PAUL. - Religious congregation that arose in Zagreb in 1856 through the work of some religious who had come from the house of Zams (Bressanone), belonging to the Institute of the Sisters of Charity of St. Vincent de Paul, whose name it retained, even though it constituted itself as an autonomous congregation. The sisters devote themselves to the care of the sick in hospitals and in private homes, as well as to the instruction and education of children. Approved by the Holy See in 1930, the Institute numbered in 1942 over 2000 sisters in 140 houses, spread throughout Yugoslavia, Albania and Bulgaria.
