FILIPPO di HEINSBERG. - Archbishop of Cologne. Having become, while still young, provost of the Chapter of Liège in Cologne, he administered the archdiocese of Cologne, as representative of Archbishop Rainaldo di Dassel, with great prudence and political tact.
In 1166 he was chancellor of the Empire, and in 1167 archbishop of Cologne. At first an ardent supporter of Federico Barbarossa, in 1169 he crowned the latter’s son Enrico V. But around 1184 he clashed with the Emperor, creating a strong opposition party and siding with Pope Urbano III, who in 1186 appointed him papal legate. In 1188 he was reconciled with the Emperor at Magonza, and in 1190 he accompanied Enrico V to Italy, where he died, near Napoli, on 15 Aug. 1191.
