PHILIP OF HEINSBERG. - Archbishop of Cologne. Having become, while still young, provost of the Chapter of Liège at Cologne, he administered the archdiocese of Cologne as representative of Archbishop Rainald of Dassel, with great prudence and political tact.

In 1166 he was chancellor of the Empire, in 1167 archbishop of Cologne. At first a fervent partisan of Frederick Barbarossa, in 1169 he crowned his son Henry V. But around 1184 he came into conflict with the Emperor, creating a strong opposition party and throwing himself onto the side of Pope Urban III, who in 1186 appointed him papal legate. In 1188 he was reconciled, at Mainz, with the Emperor, and in 1190 he accompanied Henry V to Italy, where he died, near Naples, on 15 Aug. 1191.
