FRANCO DA BOLOGNA

FRANCO da Bologna. — Miniaturist of the 13th century, mentioned by Dante (Purgatorio, X, 82-85) in contrast to Oderisio da Gubbio as an innovator. No certain works by him are known, but he may be considered the leading or among the leading Emilian miniaturists who at the end of the 13th century and in the early years of the 14th contributed to orient local painting in the direction of Giottesque naturalism.
