FROMENT, NICOLAS. - French painter, b. at Uzes. Information concerning him dates from 1461, the year in which he painted the triptych with the Resurrection of Lazarus, now in the Galleria degli Uffizi in Florence, to 1479, when he is still mentioned as painter to the court of King Renato.
Only two works by him are certainly preserved: the triptych already mentioned and another triptych with the Burning Bush, King Renato, his wife Giovanna di Laval, and several saints, preserved in the Museum of Aix-en-Provence. The work was completed between 1475 and 1476. The painter’s formation, schooled in the Flemish tradition, is attested by the harsh realism of the Uffizi triptych, whereas in his other painting there is greater serenity and breadth of vision. On the basis of these paintings, other works have been attributed to F., especially a triptych in the Louvre and the Pietà in the same Museum, originating from Vilneuve-les-Avignon.
