FROMENT, NICOLAS. - French painter, b. at Uzès. Information about him runs from 1461, the year in which he painted the triptych with the Raising of Lazarus, today in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, to 1479, when he is still recorded as painter to the court of King René.

Only two certain works by him survive: the aforementioned triptych and another triptych with the Burning Bush, King René, his wife Jeanne de Laval and some saints, preserved in the Museum of Aix in Provence. The work was completed between 1475 and 1476. The painter's training, educated in the Flemish school, is attested by the crude realism of the Uffizi triptych, while in his other painting there is a greater serenity and breadth of vision. On the basis of these paintings others have been assigned to F., particularly a triptych in the Louvre and the Pietà in the same Museum, coming from Villeneuve-lès-Avignon.
