FROMENT, Nicolas. - French painter, born in Uzès. His known activity spans from 1461, the year in which he painted the triptych with the Resurrection of Lazarus, now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, to 1479, when he is still recorded as painter to the court of René.
Only two works are securely attributed to him: the aforementioned triptych and another triptych with the Burning Bush, King René, his wife Jeanne de Laval, and several saints, preserved in the Museum of Aix-en-Provence. This work was completed between 1475 and 1476. The painter’s training, shaped by the Franco-Flemish school, is evident in the stark realism of the Uffizi triptych, while in the other painting there is greater serenity and breadth of vision. On the basis of these works, other paintings have been assigned to F., notably a triptych in the Louvre and the Pietà in the same museum, which came from Vienne-lès-Avignon.
