FUMAGALLI, ANGELO. - Cistercian historian, abbot of S. Ambrogio in Milan, born there on 28 April 1728 and died in the same city on 22 March 1804.
His name is associated with various works of a historical and diplomatic character, in which he reveals himself as a follower of Muratori and Mabillon. Notable among these are: Vicende di Milano durante la guerra con Federico I imperatore, illustrata con pergamene di quei tempi (Milan 1778; 2nd ed., posthumous, ibid. 1854); Delle istituzioni diplomatiche (in vols., ibid. 1802); Codice diplomatico santambrosiano delle carte dell'VIII e IX sec., published posthumously by Abbot C. Amoretti (ibid. 1805). He is also considered the principal author of the substantial study Delle antichità langobardiche milanesi, illustrate con dissertazioni (in vols., ibid. 1792-93).
