GALLUP, DIOCESI DI

GALLUP, Diocese of. - City and diocese in the State of New Mexico in the United States of America, created by Pope Pius XII on 16 Dec. 1939 with the apostolic constitution Ad bonum animarum. It comprises the counties of Coconino, Mohave, Apache, Navaho and Yavapai in the State of Arizona; the counties of San Juan, Mc Kinley and Catron in the State of New Mexico, and those parts of the counties of Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Bernalillo and Valencia situated west of the meridian plane.

The diocese extends over an area of 90,749 sq. km., with a population of 145,000 inhabitants, of whom 39,884 are Catholics. It has 25 parishes, 124 missions, 11 diocesan priests and 48 regulars; 12 male religious communities and 21 female. In 1946 there were 165 conversions. The diocese is a suffragan of Santa Fé. The Cathedral is dedicated to the Sacred Heart.
