GALLUP, DIOCESE of. — City and diocese in the State of New Mexico in the United States of America, established by Pope Pius XII on 16 December 1939 with the apostolic constitution Ad bonum animarum. It comprises the counties of Coconino, Mohave, Apache, Navaho, and Yavapai in the State of Arizona; the counties of San Juan, Mc Kinley, and Catron in the State of New Mexico; and those parts of the counties of Rio Arriba, Sandoval, Bernalillo, and Valencia situated west of the meridian.
The diocese covers an area of 90,749 sq. km., with a population of 145,000, of whom 39,884 are Catholics. It has 25 parishes, 124 missions, 11 diocesan priests, and 48 religious priests; 12 male and 21 female religious communities. In 1946 there were 165 conventions. The diocese is a suffragan of Santa Fé. The cathedral is dedicated to the Sacred Heart.
