GAMMACHE, PHILIPPE. – French theologian, born in 1568, died in Paris on 21 July 1625. For 25 years he taught theology in Paris.
Commissioned by Richelieu to examine, together with other theologians, E. Richer’s work De ecclesiastica et politica potestate, full of errors concerning the constitution of the Church, he confined himself to judging it inopportune. He was highly versed in knowledge of the Fathers and of sacred antiquities. His commentary on the Summa of S. Tommaso (2 vols., Paris 1627) is particularly valuable in its moral section.
