GAMMACHE, PHILIPPE. - French theologian, b. in 1568, d. in Paris on 21 July 1625. For 25 years he taught theology in Paris.
Entrusted by Richelieu with examining, together with other theologians, the work of E. Richer: De ecclesiastica et politica potestate, full of errors on the constitution of the Church, he limited himself to judging it inopportune. He was thoroughly versed in the knowledge of the Fathers and of sacred antiquities. His commentary on the Summa of St. Thomas (2 vols., Paris 1627) is particularly valuable in its moral part.
