GABRIELLI, GIOVANNI MARIA de. - Cardinal and theologian, born at Città di Castello (Perugia) on 12 Jan. 1654, died at Caprarola (Viterbo) on 17 Sept. 1711. A Cistercian monk in 1672, he was a teacher, visitor, and procurator of his Order, and finally superior general. Qualifier of the Inquisition and prefect of studies at Propaganda Fide, he was created cardinal by Innocent XII on 14 Nov. 1699.

Against Hennebel’s censures in the work Dispanetio notorum quadraginta, quas scriptor anonymus (Hennebel) em. card. Cael. Sfondrati libro, cui titulus « Nodus praedestinationis quantum homini licet dissolutus » inusit (Cologne 1698), with prior papal approval, he defended the doctrine of Lessius, championed by Cardinal Sfondrati.

Other works by him include: De Romano Pontifice et de Ecclesia asserta dogmatica ad mentem divi Bernardi ob., Ecclesiae doctoris melliflu (Rome 1686); Promptuarum selectarum assertionum historicarum, criticarum, dogmaticorum per octo priora saecula distributarum (ibid. 1687). An unpublished dogmatic-positive-scholastic work against Jews, heretics, and schismatics has remained.
