GIOVANNI MARIA DE GABRIELLI. - Cardinal and theologian, b. at Città di Castello (Perugia) on 12 Jan. 1654, d. at Caprarola (Viterbo) on 17 Sept. 1711. Cistercian monk in 1672, he was a teacher, visitor, procurator of his Order, and finally superior general. Qualifier at the Inquisition and prefect of studies at Propaganda Fide, on 14 Nov. 1699 he was created cardinal by Innocent XII.
Against the censures of Hennebel in the work Disputatio notarum quadraginta, quas scriptor anonymus (Hennebel) em. card. Coel. Sfondrati libro, cui titulus «Nodus praedestinationis quantum homini licet dissolutus» tuus sit (Cologne 1698), with prior papal approval, he defended the doctrine of LESSIUS, championed by Card. Sfondrati.
Other works: De Romano Pontifice et de Ecclesia asserta dogmatica ad mentem divi Bernardi ob., Ecclesiae doctoris melitium (Rome 1686); Promptarium selectarium assertionum historicarum, criticarum, dogmaticarum per octo priora saecula distributarum (ibid. 1687). A dogmatico-positive-scholastic work against Jews, heretics, and schismatics remains unpublished.
