GAND, GIUSEPPINA. — Born on 16 July 1819 at Boulay (Lorraine), died on 2 February 1907. She received
the habit of the Dominican nuns at Chalon-sur-Saône on 19 March 1839, taking the name Sister S. Domenico della Croce.
She combined a spirit of piety and mortification with great zeal for apostolic works; she instructed novices in the religious life, and in 1854 was chosen to direct three devout women who at Bonnay wished to consecrate themselves to the service of God and the poor in observance of the rule of the Third Order of St. Dominic. Thus she became the foundress of the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of S. Caterina da Siena for the education of youth and the care of the sick, whose mother house is located at Etrépagny (Eure). Her cause of beatification was introduced by decree of 17 April 1940.
