GAND, GIUSEPPINA. - B. July 16, 1819 at Boulay (Lorraine), d. Feb. 2, 1907. She received the habit of the Dominican sisters at Chalon-sur-Saône on March 19, 1839, with the name of Sister St. Dominic of the Cross.

She joined to a spirit of piety and mortification a great zeal for the works of the apostolate, trained the novices in the religious life, and in 1854 was chosen to direct three pious sisters who at Bonnay wished to consecrate themselves to the service of God and of the poor in observance of the rule of the Dominican Third Order. Thus she became the foundress of the Congregation of the Dominican Sisters of St. Catherine of Siena for the education of youth and the care of the sick, whose mother house is at Etrépagny (Eure). Her cause of beatification was introduced by decree of April 17, 1940.
