GASPÉ. - City and diocese of Canada, capital of the district of the same name, situated on the north-eastern side of Lower Canada, between the St. Lawrence and Chaleur Bay. The diocese was erected by Pope Pius XI on 5 May 1922, by the apostolic constitution Praedecosorum nostrorum, by dismemberment from the diocese of S. Germano di Rimuski, of which it is now a suffragan.
It is divided into 4 districts (Bonaventura, G.-south, G.-north, and the Magdalen Islands). It covers 10,000 sq. km. It has a population of approximately 94,570 inhabitants, of whom 75,944 are French-speaking Catholics and 9,000 English-speaking Catholics.
