GATTI, GIUSEPPE. — Born in Rome on 23 Nov. 1839, died in Oriolo Romano on 12 Sept. 1914; an archaeologist highly skilled in classical and Christian epigraphy, Roman topography, and Roman law. He earned his law degree *ad praemium*. He was a close friend of G. Heuzen and T. Mommsen, and contributed to vol. VI of the *Corpus Inscriptionum Latinarum*; above all, he was a friend of G. B. De Rossi, with whom he collaborated for over thirty years and was entrusted with continuing the work on the *Inscriptiones Christianae Urbis Romae septimo saeculo antiquiores*. However, only after his death did a supplementary fascicle appear, extending up to the year 395, since G. was absorbed by his teaching of Roman law at the Accademia storico-giuridica and in his roles as director of the Museo Nazionale Romano and of the excavations in Rome, later as superintendent of excavations and discoveries of antiquities in Rome and the province.
He was also director of the *Bulletin* of the communal archaeological commission, in which, besides numerous articles, he began in 1887 together with G. B. De Rossi a *Miscellanea* of bibliographical and critical notices on the topography and history of the monuments of Rome. He was a national fellow of the Accademia dei Lincei, a member of the Pontifical Commission of Sacred Archaeology, and from 1900 until his death, president of the Roman Academy of Archaeology.
