RÖMISCHE QUARTALSCHRIFT. - A quarterly periodical of Christian antiquities and ecclesiastical history, founded by Msgr. Antonio de Waal in 1887, edited by the rector of the Camposanto Teutonico in Rome, in collaboration with the members of the Historical Institute of the Görresgesellschaft.
The periodical's main purpose was the publication of scholarly studies on the monuments and sources of Christian archaeology and ecclesiastical history, also offering brief reports on work in progress, reviews of very recent books, and updates of the specialized bibliography. Up to 1939, 47 annual volumes appeared (with an interruption from 1916 to 1921 because of the First World War) and 28 supplementary fascicles. Among these, mention should be made of J. Wittig, Papa Damasus I., suppl. 14 (1902); id., Die altchristlichen Skulpturen im Museum... des Campo Santo in Rom, 15 (1906); Fr. J. Dölger, Konstantin d. Gr. und seine Zeit, 19 (1913); Fr. Sühling, Die Taube als rel. Symbol im christl. Altertum, 24 (1930); J. Brinctine, Sacramentarium Rossianum, 25 (1930); Ph. Oppenheim, Das Mönchskleid im christl. Altertum, 28 (1931). Waal's colleagues in the editorship were: in 1892-96, H. Finke; in 1897-1906, S. Ehses; in 1907-21, J. P. Kirsch. His successors in the direction were: J. P. Kirsch, E. Göller, E. David, H. Stoeckle. From 1939, because of the Second World War, the journal ceased.
