EHSES, STEFAN. - Church historian, b. at Zeltingen on the Moselle on 9 Dec. 1855, d. at Rome on 19 Jan. 1926. He attended the University of Würzburg, and, ordained a priest in 1885, came to Rome for research in the Vatican Archives. Having returned to his homeland, he was parish priest at Ehrenbreitstein and at Koblenz.
Having returned to Rome, he became secretary of the Roman institute of the Görresgesellschaft.
He edited the edition of the Nuntiaturberichte aus Deutschland 1585-1590 (2 vols., Paderborn 1895-99); and of the Concilii Tridentini Actorum in the series Concilium Tridentinum (Societas Görresiana; vols. IV-IX, Freiburg im Breisgau 1904-24). Another valuable work is the Römische Dokumente zur Geschichte der Ehescheidung Heinrichs VIII (Paderborn 1893). He was an assiduous contributor to the Römische Quartalschrift and to the Historisches Jahrbuch.
