GELBOE. - Biblical name of the group of hills — the north-eastern boundary of the mountain of Ephraim and of Samaria — that skirt the plain of Esdraelon to the south-east and serve as the watershed between the valley of the Jordan and the Mediterranean slope.
On the "dead of G." took place the battle of the Israelites against the Philistines in which Saul and his three sons died (I Sam. 28, 4); the mountains remained famous for the curse that David hurled against them in the sublime elegy on the death of King Saul and his friend Jonathan (II Sam. 1, 21).
Eusebius (Onom., 72, 73) records the village of Gelbus six miles from Scythopolis (Beisan), whose name survives today in the village of Gelbon. The mountain is called today Gebel Fuqā'sh after the village of the same name perched on its summits (548 m.).
