GERARD OF MONZA, Saint. - Also called, from the name of his family, Tintore or dei Tintori, b. at Monza ca. 1134, d. there on 6 June 1202.
Left an orphan, he consecrated all his goods and his life to the relief and care of the destitute and the sick, received first lovingly in his own house, then in a purpose-built hospital, which he erected at his own expense, provided with good statutes and placed under the patronage of the city authority and the obedience of the archpriest pro tempore of the place. Tireless in his zeal, he himself sought out the sick, especially those afflicted with the plague, carried them on his shoulders, washed them with solicitous care, above all if they were covered with sores or leprous. And God in turn cooperated with miracles of healing and also with kindly acts of providence, once multiplying the wheat and the wine for the hospital, which had used up all its supplies.
Venerated as a saint immediately after his death, St. Charles Borromeo instituted the process for the confirmation of his cult, which he obtained in 1582 from Gregory XIII.
