GERARDO di MONZA, saint. - Also called, from the family name, Tintore or dei Tintori, born in Monza around 1134, died there on 6 June 1202.
Having been left an orphan, he devoted all his possessions and his life to the relief and care of the needy and sick, first lovingly received into his home, then into a special hospital, erected by him at his own expense, provided with sound statutes and placed under the patronage of the city authorities and the obedience of the archpriest pro tempore of the place. Untiring in his zeal, he himself sought out the sick, especially those afflicted by the plague, carried them on his shoulders, and washed them with solicitous care, particularly if they were covered with sores or leprous. And God in turn concurred with miracles of healing and also with gracious providential interventions, once multiplying the wheat and wine for the hospital, which had consumed all its provisions.
Venerated as a saint immediately after his death, s. Carlo Borromeo instituted proceedings for the confirmation of the cult, which he obtained in 1582 from Gregorio XIII.
