GERINI, GIOVANNI BATTISTA. – Educationalist, born in Vessalico (Imperia) on 9 February 1859, died in Turin on 13 February 1916. From 1884 he carried out his activity as a professor of literary subjects in the Gymnasia of Cuneo, Rome, and Turin, and, as a scholar and writer, in the field of pedagogy. An admirer and continuator of G. Allievo, he is connected with the finest traditions of the Piedmontese pedagogical school.
His principal work consists of Gli scrittori pedagogici italiani, nei secc. XV, XVI, XVII, XVIII e XIX (5 vols., Turin 1896–1910), which, although it makes no notable contributions from the theoretical standpoint and does not grasp the evolutionary process of the doctrines in their logical development, nevertheless investigates with accuracy the writings of authors of even secondary importance, gathering a rich body of information, ideas, and observations useful and indispensable to the historian of Italian pedagogy. He also wrote: Le dottrine pedagogiche di G. Loche (there 1893); Le dottrine pedagogiche di T. Campanella (there 1899); V. Gioberti e le sue idee pedagogiche, in Atti della R. Accademia di scienze di Torino, 1907, pp. 611–34; Le dottrine pedagogiche di M. T. Cicerone, L. A. Seneca, M. F. Quintiliano e Plinio il Giovane, C. Claudiano, Giuliano imperatore e Plutarco, preceded by a study of education among the Romans (there 1914).
