JEREMIAS II TRANOS, Patriarch of Constantinople. - He was patriarch in the following years: 1572-79, 1580-84, 1589-95. On the occasion of his journey to Russia, he gave his consent to the erection of the patriarchate of Moscow. The Lutheran theologians of Tübingen sought a union between Wittenberg and Byzantium, but J. decisively rejected, as appears from his correspondence with those theologians between 1576 and 1581, the foundations of the Lutheran confession. With Pope Gregory XIII he was several times in correspondence on the occasion of the reform of the calendar and of a twofold pontifical embassy sent to him; he did not, however, carry out his promises concerning this question. Precious are his praise for the erection of the Pontifical Greek College of Rome, and his condemnation of Protestantism, also given in a letter to the Pope.
