GEORGE AMIRUTZES. - Official (protovestiarios) at the court of the emperor of Trebizond, David (1458-62), and counsellor of the Byzantine emperor John VIII Palaeologus at the Council of Florence. Here he was a defender of the Union, indeed he issued a profession of the Catholic faith recently published by M. Jugie (v. bibl.). Having returned to Trebizond, he became a bitter opponent of Rome, as a letter of his to Demetrius, duke of Nauplia, informs us (published by L. Mohler and then by M. Jugie [v. bibl.]). After the conquest of Trebizond by the Turks (1461), he did not show strength of character, but went over to Islam, toward which he was also driven by his hardly edifying private life. Some of his writings are still preserved, in addition to those indicated above.
