GEYSER, JOSEPH. - German Neo-Scholastic philosopher, b. 16 March 1869 at Erkelenz (Rhineland), d. 11 April 1948 at Siegsdorf. He obtained his doctorate in philosophy in Rome at the Gregorian University (1892) and at Munich (1897). He taught at the Universities of Münster, Freiburg im Breisgau and Munich until 1935.

On the basis of the Aristotelian-Thomist tradition G. strives to found, not without originality, a critical and realist metaphysics, also making use of the results of empirical psychology as well as of the natural sciences and taking a position with regard to contemporary philosophy. Principal works: Das philosophische Gottesproblem (1899); Grundlegung der empirischen Psychologie (1902); Lehrbuch der allgemeinen Psychologie (1908); Grundlagen der Logik und Erkenntnistlehre (1909); Die Erkenntnistheorie des Aristoteles (1917); Über Wahrheit und Evidenz (1918); Eidologie (1921); Das Gesetz der Ursache (1933).
