GIORDANO, LUCA. – Painter and engraver, born in Naples in 1632, died there on 12 January 1705. He received his first instruction from his father; then he was placed in the workshop of Ribera. Very soon he began a series of journeys to the major artistic centres of the Peninsula: Rome, Florence, Parma, and Venice.

position, which constitutes the first essay of authentic Baroque painting in Naples and the starting point for the great decoration of the southern 18th century. L. G. was also a painter of portraits, still lifes, and genre scenes.
He is best appreciated in his magnificent drawings and sketches, where the impetuosity and freshness of his inventiveness are most evident.
