GIORNALE ECCLESIASTICO DI ROMA, IL. — Roman religious periodical begun on 2 July 1785; printed by Giovanni Zempel near S. Lucia della Tinta, it appeared on Saturdays in four pages. It had an annual index.
The G. E. aimed at a universal character, examining everything relating to the Church and ecclesiastical history, with news and critical reviews of all books published in Italy and abroad. The same subject was continued across several issues.
On 17 February 1798 the G. E. was suspended because of political events; it reappeared for another year in 1825. The title page, with symbolic illustrations, bore the wording: « Roma presso Vincenzo Poggioli ». It had continuous pagination, indexes, and bibliographical bulletins; in its final period it appeared somewhat different from before. Its program, already set out in the preface, was directed against the antireligious spirit of Voltaire and Rousseau, against Jansenism and the other heretical sects. News from Rome occupied first place, followed by Italian and foreign news.
The director of the G. E. was Fr. Gioacchino Ventura, procurator general of the Theatines.
