GIORNALE DE' LETTERATI D'ITALIA. - Founded in Venice in 1710 by A. Zeno, F. Maffei, and A. Vallisnieri, it was the most distinguished example of Italian learned journalism in the eighteenth century. Among its contributors, together with G. B. Morgagni, were the astronomer G. Poleni, L. A. Muratori, E. Manfredi, and all the most eminent scientists and scholars of the period.
The journal aimed to make known what was being produced in every part of Italy in the fields of learning, archaeology, medical and natural sciences, mathematics and mechanics, as well as in ancient and modern literatures; it also sought to defend the good name of Italian men of letters, whom certain foreign journals mocked. The diligence, moderation, and objectivity displayed by its writers won the G. wide esteem both in Italy and abroad. Apostolo Zeno was its editor until his departure for Vienna. The journal then passed into other hands and lasted until 1740.
