GIOVANNI, ANTIPAPA

JOHN, Antipope. - On the death of Pope Gregory IV (25 Jan. 844) the populace, with violent demonstrations, succeeded in having the deacon J. proclaimed pontiff and enthroned him at the Lateran; the aristocrats, on the other hand, chose the elderly priest Sergius. The resistance of J. and his supporters was soon broken, and Sergius was able to be regularly consecrated at St. Peter's; the emperor Lothair sent his son Louis to Rome to conduct an inquiry and put an end to the devastation that continued in the countryside at the hands of the malcontents; Louis openly recognized the legitimacy of Pope Sergius's election.
