John of Nikiu

GIOVANNI di NIKIU. – Monophysite bishop of Nikiu, an island in the Nile delta, who toward the end of the 7th century wrote in Greek or Coptic a Universal History of interest for the events of the 7th century and especially for the Arabs’ conquest of Egypt.

The work has survived only in an Ethiopic version, made in 1601 from an Arabic version (ed. H. Zotenberg, La Chronique de Jean de N., 2nd ed., Paris 1935).
